Why do windows need regular adjustment?

PVC windows are durable and low-maintenance, but regular adjustment extends their lifespan and ensures a good seal. A poorly adjusted window can cause draughts, increase heat loss, or damage the handle mechanism and weatherstrip. The good news: seasonal adjustment is something you can do yourself.

Tools needed:

  • 4 mm hex key (Allen key)
  • 5 mm hex key (Allen key)
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Lubricant (WD-40 or similar)
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Sheet of paper (seal test)

Step by step — adjusting your windows

01

Remove hinge covers

Each hinge has a plastic cover hiding the adjustment screws. Use a flat knife or blunt screwdriver to gently lever it off — they are easy to remove without force.

02

Adjust height

The bottom hinge has a vertical adjustment screw (usually 4 mm hex). Turn clockwise to raise the window, anti-clockwise to lower it. Usually 1–3 full turns is enough.

03

Adjust lateral position

The side screw (5 mm hex) on the hinge moves the window left or right. Useful when the window closes with uneven pressure against the frame.

04

Adjust compression against weatherstrip

On the handle side of the window you'll find one or more cams (eccentric pins) — small oval or rounded parts with a slot. Turn them with a flat screwdriver to change compression. In winter: more compression for a tighter seal. In summer: less, to reduce wear on the weatherstrip.

05

Lubricate moving parts

Apply lubricant to all hinges, the locking mechanism, handle, and lock points. Wipe off excess with a cloth to avoid attracting dust.

06

Test the weatherstrip seal

Close the window and try to pull out a sheet of paper along the edge. If it comes out with slight resistance — the seal is good. If it pulls out freely — the weatherstrip is worn and should be replaced.

When to call a specialist?

If the window still closes with difficulty after adjustment, the glazing unit fogs up inside, a hinge has broken, or the window no longer stays open — professional repair is needed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about window adjustment

We recommend adjusting twice a year — switching to summer mode in spring (lighter closing) and winter mode in autumn (tighter seal against the weather strip). If the window becomes hard to close or you feel a draught, adjust sooner.

Usually a 4 mm and 5 mm hex key (Allen key), a screwdriver, and sometimes a flat blade to remove hinge covers. Some systems require a special Roto or Maco adjustment key.

Condensation on the room-facing glass surface is caused by high indoor humidity and poor ventilation — not a window defect. Condensation between the glass panes (inside the double glazing unit) means the seal has failed and the glazing unit needs replacing.

Seasonal adjustment and lubrication are simple tasks you can do yourself. However, if a handle is broken, a hinge has snapped, or the glazing unit is fogging up inside — call a specialist.
